Every so often, we find ourselves in a situation that changes our lives forever. Even the worst of these situations can have a silver lining however. My name is Heather, and this is the story of just such an event, and a man named Josey. About 4 years ago, my husband Chris was critically injured while working as a professional firefighter. Two of his fellow firefighters who were working within a foot of his shoulder were killed, devastating an entire city. During the investigation, the National Response Team for the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms was helping to find answers to the cause of the fire and collapse. At the time my husband was giving his account to investigators, he was introduced to Josey, an ATF agent who was actively up to his shoulders in the rubble of the building. Josey acted as a liaison during Chris’s interaction with law enforcement, and stood by his side for the entire process. Very long story short (you can read more about our story in Sister Mary, The Baker, The Barber and The Bricklayer) this quiet guy with a deep southern accent saved our lives. Anyone who has suffered severe emotional trauma can tell you it is a very dark and lonely road. Dealing with physical and emotional injuries can leave you exhausted and hopeless. Through his training and God-given understanding of the process of trauma, Josey guided us through the worst time of our lives. He also became a very good friend. Fast forward a few years, and Josey was teaching at the ICISF World Congress on Critical Incident Stress Management, and having problems with a Powerpoint presentation for his class. Having a background in art and information management, I offer to pitch in where I can. What else do you do for a friend that has given so much to save your life? Since it has long been Josey’s dream to help guide hurting souls out of the darkness, he started putting a plan together for doing just that. It is now my honor and privilege to assist Josey in the only realm he just does not have the patience for. The world of internet presence. He always talks about being able to “Do his part”. Well this is my part. If through my minimal skill online Josey is able to teach a class, start a peer support program, or guide one more person away from that deep precipice of hell – I will consider my time very well spent. While it is not the norm for a behind the scenes computer jockey to come out in the open, I think in this case folks should know who they are dealing with. I am very proud to be Josey’s voice online.
